Data Analytics Specialist
About the role
The Data Analytics Specialist / Data Scientist will support the Government of Alberta's Data Centre of Excellence by designing and delivering advanced analytics solutions that enable data-driven decision-making across government ministries. The role involves developing analytical models, AI/ML solutions, dashboards, and data products while collaborating with technical teams and business stakeholders. The successful candidate will help implement the Government of Alberta's Data Strategy by transforming complex data into actionable insights, supporting predictive and prescriptive analytics, and promoting the strategic use of data across the organization.
Key Responsibilities
Data Analytics & Data Science
Design, develop, and maintain analytical models and data products. Analyze large and complex datasets to generate business insights. Prepare, clean, and transform raw data for predictive and prescriptive analytics. Apply statistical modelling, machine learning, AI, and data mining techniques. Develop algorithms and analytical solutions that deliver measurable business value. Perform data de-identification and support synthetic data creation where required.
Analytics Solution Development
Design and support the development of analytical services and AI-enabled applications. Build dashboards, visualizations, and custom reporting solutions. Develop reusable analytical models and assets. Capture and maintain business and technical metadata for analytical products.
Stakeholder & Business Support
Gather and document business and technical requirements. Translate complex business questions into analytical solutions. Present findings, roadmaps, frameworks, and recommendations to senior leadership. Support strategic decision-making through evidence-based analytics. Collaborate with internal ministries and external stakeholders.
Must-Have Qualifications
Education
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
Experience
6+ years of experience using statistical programming or computer languages for data analysis. 6+ years building analytical and quantitative models. 6+ years preparing data for predictive and prescriptive modelling. 5+ years translating complex business problems into analytical solutions. 6+ years applying data analysis methodologies and modelling techniques. 6+ years using statistical analysis and data mining techniques. 6+ years applying Artificial Intelligence (AI) and/or Machine Learning (ML) in analytics projects.
Nice-to-Have Qualifications
5+ years with data sharing, data linkage, data de-identification, and metadata management. 2+ years building and deploying end-to-end analytical or AI-enabled applications. 5+ years integrating data from multiple internal and external data sources. 5+ years working directly with business clients and explaining complex analytical concepts. 2+ years designing and maintaining data pipelines or analytics workflows. 5+ years creating dashboards, reports, and data visualizations. 3+ years working with big data technologies (e.g., Hadoop, Spark) or cloud platforms. 3+ years working with large government datasets.
